Tombstone on left with the text enlarged on right. “In memory of Abigail Thayer who died September 10, 1823 in the 64 year of her age.”
This tombstone is found in Mt. Hope cemetery in Rochester but it wasn’t always in that cemetery. Abigail Thayer was originally buried in the West Cemetery that was on West Main Street. That cemetery was closed and 1859 the burials were moved to the new (and much larger) Mt. Hope Cemetery.
From data found on WorldConnect, Abigail was born 18 Oct. 1759 in Thompson, Conn. to Capt. John Green and Abilene Gile. Abigail married Nathan Thayer on 3 Nov. 1779 in either Mass. or Conn. and they had 9 children. Nathan died in 1808 in Rome, NY and the on-line data also states that Abigail also died in Rome. Obviously the researchers were wrong about the location of death but they have the same date of death as on the tombstone.
