The next song to hit the top of the charts in 1962 was “He’s A Rebel” by The Crystals. The song was written by Gene Pitney and produced by Phil Spector. Spector learned that Vikki Carr was to record the song and decided to rush out his own version. The Crystals were touring on the east coast at the time, so Spector instead had Darlene Love sing lead backed by The Blossoms. The actual Crystals were surprised to hear a new song attributed to them on the radio. They had to add the song to their repertoire.
“He’s A Rebel” hit number one on the Billboard charts for 2 weeks (Oct. 29 – Nov. 10). It only made it up to the number 2 spot on the Cash Box charts for those same 2 weeks.
According to The Crystals website, they still tour. Like most groups from the 60s, only one member, Dolores “Dee Dee” Kenniebrew, was in the original group.
