I went to see the progress on the swing bridge at Charlotte that is being dismantled. I was really surprised to that it is almost completely gone. It has only been a little over a month since the work started. Most of the steel work is gone. If you click on the photo you can see that there is a small crew working on cutting up some remaining steel. At either end of the photo are the supports where the ends of the bridge rested.
It was an ugly bridge but it was also unique. It pivoted on the center to let trains cross the Genesee river and then turned to boat pass. The US Coast Guard, who has control of the river, had been pushing for year to have the bridge torn down. There is only one large ship that travels the river. It brings cement to a terminal near Turning Point Park.
Small parts of the swing bridge have been given to local area historical societies as memorials.
