The first new song to hit the top of the records charts in 1963 was “Go Away Little Girl” by Steve Lawrence. Steve had a string of songs in the late 50s and early 60s that charted but this was his only song that made it to the number one spot. Much of Steve’s career has centered in nightclubs and the stage. He and his wife Eydie Gormé made numerous guest appearances on TV variety shows.
The song was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The lyrics consist of a young man asking an attractive young woman to stay away from him, so he won’t be tempted to betray his steady girlfriend. The song was also a number one hit in 1971 for Donny Osmond. The Steve Lawrence version was the number one song on the Billboard chart for Jan. 6 – 19 and number one on the Cash Box chart for Jan. 13 – 26.
