The next song to hit the top of the record charts in 1963 was “Surf City” by Jan and Dean. The song was written by Jan Berry and Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. It became the first surf song to reach number one on the record charts. It was the top song on the Billboard Hot 100 list for 2 weeks (July 14 – 27). It only was at the number one spot on the Cash Box list for only the week of July 21 – 27.
This was one of many hit songs for Jan Berry and Dean Torrence. They had 26 chart hitting songs from 1958 to 1966. On April 12, 1966, Jan Berry was in a severe auto crash that mirrored the groups’ song “Dead Man’s Curve.” He suffered brain damaged and was partial paralyzed. Jan recovered well enough to do reunion concerts from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Jan Berry died in March 2004. Dean Torrence occasionally tours with a group doing Jan and Dean hits.
