Ancestry.com acquires FindAGrave.com

Ancestry is buying the volunteer website Find A Grave. Many, including me, were at first worried that all the volunteer work that we have done adding to F-A-G would be just another database on the giant Ancestry. Ancestry CEO, Tim Sullivan, says that “We will maintain Find A Grave as a free website, will retain its existing policies and mode of operation, and look forward to working with Jim Tipton and the entire Find A Grave team.” Ancestry plans to add to F-A-G by launching a new mobile app, improve customer support, introduce an enhanced edit system for submitting updates to memorials and add  foreign-language support.

We all forget that even volunteer websites have to be maintained by people. It cost money to have a popular website on the internet. Plus people should be paid to keep the website working.

I have added only 780 memorials to F-A-G but added a total of 1555 photos . That is a drop in the bucket compared to the 50 top contributors who all contributed over 100,000 memorials. The top contributor has over 1,600,000 memorials. All the contributors have put F-A-G over 106 million records.
