Snow!

snowWe got the first measurable snow of the season over the last couple of days. I complain about the snow and so do many other people. Some say we are getting more snow than we used to and others say we are getting less. I found a historic list of amounts of snow in Sketches of Rochester dated 1838. The book lists the monthly amount of snow for the years 1831 to 1837. Comparing those averages to current listed averages (in inches):

  • November – 1830s: 5.7 – current average: 7.3
  • December – 1830s: 11.2 = current average:21.8
  • January – 1830s: 14.1 – current average: 28.2
  • February – 1830s: 24.1 – current average: 21.5
  • March – 1830s: 8.4 – current average: 16.3
  • April – 1830s: 2.2 – current average: 3.9
  • Seasonal totals – 1830s: 68.4 – current average: 99.5

So it appears that we are actually get more snow now than they did in the 1830s. Nobody can predict how much snow we will get this season.
