The Rochester Public Library has added a new book to their online collection. This new book is Business Directory of Western New York for the years 1898-1899. What makes this directory useful is that it covers both the big cities and also many of the smaller villages in western NY. Included in this directory are businesses in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Auburn, Niagara Falls, Dunkirk, Lockport, Brockport, Batavia, Canandaigua, Seneca Falls, Geneva , Waterloo, Arcade, Attica, North Tonawanda, Lancaster and Erie, PA. In most of the places, the businesses are listed by category (hotels, bicycles, pianos, etc.). It is a 11mb PDF file that is searchable. If your family owned any kind of business or worked in a trade (like carpenters, blacksmiths), then you should check out this directory.
