Today is Veteran’s Day. Time to give a big Thank You to all those that serviced in the US military.
Ancestry.com is offering free military records today. I found a new record on Ancestry of my grandfather’s step-brother, Homer Halsey. This was the first military record that I have seen that gives his parent’s names. I already knew their names but it is good to have some proof. Homer’s mother died when he was about 5 or 6. Then my great-grandfather took off and left Homer with neighbors. Homer joined the US Army in 1914 when he was only 18. He stayed in the Army until 1944. You would think that there would be lots of military records for him online but there are very few. Also because he was in the military, Homer got skipped in the 1920 and 1930 census. Homer was listed in the 1940 census at a US military base in the Canal Zone (Panama).
