A couple of weeks ago the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) announced a new website, American Ancestors (americanancestors.org). This follows the re-branding of the NEHGS quarterly member magazine earlier this year to be called American Ancestors. The new website joins the other NEHGS websites of newenglandancestors.org and newyorkancestors.org. The announcement from NEHGS said that the new website has a faster search engine and new image viewer so I wanted to test it out. All three websites search the same databases. I found out that in fact the new website turns out to have a faster search plus the the image viewer takes less time to pop up the image.
There are only a few free databases at NEHGS. In order to see all the search results you will have to become a NEHGS member. Memberships start at $75 for an annual membership but if you have a lot of New England ancestors, as I do, then it definitely worth the price.
