Hit Songs of 1968 – #3

This song is just a silly song, but as they used to say on American Bandstand, “it has a good beat and you can dance to it.” “Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)” was the only hit by John Fred and His Playboy Band. The song was written by Fred and his bandmate Andrew Bernard. The title is a play on the title of The Beatles’ song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

“Judy in Disguise” was the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks, Jan. 14 – 27, 1968. It was on the top of the Cash Box record chart for just the week of Jan. 21 – 27.

The group was formed in 1956 but only played around the State of Louisiana for years. After “Judy…” the group continued to record but never had much success. John Fred died in New Orleans April 4, 2005 at the age of 63.
