In April 1968 Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass had a TV special. On that show Herb sang “This Guy’s in Love with You.” It was the first time that he sang a song as the rest of the group’s songs were instrumentals. The TV special helped the song climb to the top of the record charts. The song was written by the fantastic writing duo of Burt Bacharach and Hal David and had been recorded by Dione Warwick but she hadn’t release it. She did release her version in January 1969 and it got up to the number 7 spot on the charts.
Herb Alpert recorded his first song “Lonely Bull” in his garage and all parts on that song were played by him. It became so popular that he had to put together a group so he could tour. Herb is the “A” of A&M records. That company was acquired by PolyGram in 1989. Herb and his wife, Lani Hall, were at the Rochester Jazzfest two or three years ago.
“This Guy’s in Love with You” was on the top of the Billboard Hot 100, the Cash Box chart, and Record World’s 100 Top Pops for 4 weeks (June 16 – July 13).
