Hit Songs of 1968 – #21

How about a little Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66. They had a hit with “The Look of Love” in 1968. The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It was used in 1967 in the movie Casino Royale and sung by Dusty Springfield. It was nominated as an Academy Award best song of the  year. Instead of having Dusty sing at the award ceremony they had Sergio Mendes do his version of the song. That helped it climb up the record charts. It got up to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week of June 30 – July 6.

Sergio Mendes was from Brazil and came to the US in the early 1960s. Bossa Nova was just starting to gain some popularity and that helped his career upward. When he formed the group Brasil ’66 his record company asked him to record songs in English. One of the girl singers in the group was Lani Hall who would become Herb Alpert’s wife.

He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2012 as co-writer of the song “Real in Rio” from the animated film Rio. His website says that a new album is in the works.
