I own a few TV program guides from 1953 that were published in Rochester. At that time there was one TV station in Buffalo, 2 in Syracuse and just one TV station in Rochester. The Rochester station was WHAM on channel 6 which later changed call letters to WROC and moved to channel 8.
Let’s start with the weekday morning line-up on channel 6.
- 7:00 – 9:00 – Today with the host Dave Garroway, and announcers Jack Lescoullie and Jim Fleming. Today first aired in Jan. 1952. The guide also shows that there was local news from 8:25 to 8:30.
- 9:00 – 9:55 – test pattern. Must be they couldn’t find any program to put out on!
- 9:55 – 10:00 – Thought for Today – prob. a religious program…
- 10:00 – 10:30 – Ding Dong School. I remember watching this program that was for pre-schoolers. It was similar to the much later, Mr. Rogers. Watch an episode of Ding Dong School from 1953, here, on the Internet Archive.
- 10:30 – 11:00 – Take It Easy
- 11:00 – 11:30 (Mon., Wed., Fri.) – 1 In Family
- 11:00 – 11:15 ((Tues., Thurs.) – The guide just says “Godfrey” which would be Arthur Godfrey but it isn’t known which show this would be. He had a few shows on at this time.
- 11:15 – 11:30 (Tues.) – Tower Clock
- 11:15 – 11:30 (Thurs.) – French Lesson
- 11:30 – 12:00 - Strike It Rich. This program had people tell their hard luck stories and then the person that sounded the most destitute would get a cash prize.
