The Supremes were back on the top of the top charts in late 1968. Actually, by this time, the group was officially “Diana Ross and The Supremes.” “Love Child” was the 11th song by the group to hit the top of the charts. Only Dian Ross is heard on the song and the other two ladies, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, did not sing on the song. The background singers were studio musicians from Motown. When the song was performed on “The Ed Sullivan Show” on Sept. 29th (below) they were all lip syncing.
In spite of of the fact that the song was about an illegitimate child, it still got maximum air-play. It was the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 record chart for 2 weeks (Nov. 24 – Dec. 7). On the Cash Box chart it was on the top for three weeks (Nov. 17 – Dec 7).
