Hit Songs of 1969 – #1

The first new song to hit the top of the record charts in 1969 was “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me.” This song was recorded before this famous version by Diana Ross & The Supremes and The Temptations but those ones didn’t make up very far up the charts. Lead vocals are by Diana Ross and Eddie Kendricks.

There was a TV special on Dec. 9, 1968 featuring both groups but they did not perform the song on that special. In fact, the group never performed the song live together. Both group did later perform the song separately.

“I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” was the number one song on the chart of Record World magazine for three weeks; Dec. 29, 1968 to Jan. 18, 1969. On the Cash Box chart it held the #1 spot for just the week of Jan. 12 – 18. Then on the Billboard Hot 100 chart it only got up to the #2 spot for the weeks of Jan. 5 – 18.
