Rochester TV, 1953 – Sun.

The first you will notice about the Sunday schedule from 1953 is that channel 6, WHAM-TV didn’t sign on until noon. The Colgate Comedy Hour had different hosts each week and this week was the return of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis with guest singer Mary McCarthy. Here is the full day schedule for 3 May 1953:

  • 12:00 – 12:15 – Balance Your Budget. A game show with lady contestants. Bert Parks is host.
  • 12:15 – 12:30 – News Review.
  • 12:30 -1:00 – You Are There. Dramas on historic events that are done like a live news interview.
  • 1:00 – 1:30 – Wisdom of Ages. A discussion show with children and adults.
  • 1:30 – 2:00 – Frontiers of Faith.
  • 2:00 -  2:30 – The Name’s the Same. A game show where people who have the same name as famous people are questioned to find out their name.
  • 2:30 – 3:00 – The Stu Erwin Show. The story of a High School Principal and his family.
  • 3:00 – 3:30 – Victory at Sea. Documentary of the US Navy during WWII. An Emmy award winner. These were rerun for many years to come.
  • 3:30 – 4:00 – What’s My Name. A quiz show starring Paul Winchell and his dummy, Jerry Mahoney.
  • 4:00 – 4:30 – Arthur Godfrey and His Friends. Lots of songs and music by upcoming artists.
  • 4:30 – 5:00 – Hollywood Screen Test. Dramas with young theatrical hopefuls.
  • 5:00 – 5:30 – Adventures of Superman. One of my favorites from my youth. I even saw George Reeves at a county fair and got a photo from him as Superman.
  • 5:30 – 6:00 – Terry & the Pirates. Adventure series based on the long running comic strip.
  • 6:00 – 6:30 – This is Your Life. Ralph Edwards surprises celebrities with the stories of their live including people from their past.
  • 6:30 – 7:00 – The Red Buttons Show. Comedy and variety.
  • 7:00 – 7:30 – The Red Skelton Show. Red Skelton had a great number of comedic characters in his sketches. This show lasted until 1971.
  • 7:30 – 8:00 – Mr. Peepers. Wally Cox stars as a High School biology teacher in this sit-com.
  • 8:00 – 9:00 – Colgate Comedy Hour. Martin and Lewis as hosts on this date.
  • 9:00 – 10:00 – Philco TV Playhouse. Drama anthology.
  • 10:00 – 10:30 – The Doctor. A series dealing with mental stress.
  • 10:30 – 11:00 – Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Presents. Dramatizations of people caught in unusual situations.
  • 11:00 – 11:30 - Fireside Theatre. Another drama anthology.
  • 11:30 – 12:00 – Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts. A showcase of undiscovered talent. This was Arthur’s first TV show that began in Dec. 1948.
  • 12:00 – ? – Five Star Theatre.
