INTERLAKEN - John D. Russell, of 8488 S. Main St., Interlaken, passed away at the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca on Friday, June 9, 2006, at the age of 69. Born in Hamilton, Virginia, on July 28, 1936, John was the son of Lester H. and Hilda E. Wilklow Russell. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict, receiving an Honorable Discharge, with the rank of Sergeant on November 22, 1957. John worked as a Security Guard at the Seneca Army Depot in Romulus for 13 years.
In 1971, John and his wife, Joan, founded Russell's Disposal Service in Interlaken. The couple operated this successful business for 25 years, retiring in 1996. In his retirement, John spent time with his wife, children and grandchildren. There was nothing that John wouldn't do for family and his most cherished memories were of events they had shared together. Antique car shows were high on John's priority list and he often entered his treasured 1938 Ford pick-up. His passion for automobiles was shared with a love of flying. John endured the many hours of course-work and flying time required to become a pilot and was elated when he completed his first solo flight.
John was involved in 4-H and held membership in the Arthur E. Bouton American Legion Post #770 in Trumansburg. He followed the NASCAR circuit and slowed life down at times by going fishing. John took great pride in keeping the lawn and gardens surrounding his home in impeccable condition.
In addition to his devoted wife of 50 years, Joan Woodward Russell, John is survived by one son, Thomas A. (Joan) Russell of Boca Raton, FL; three daughters, Deborah L. (Randy) Brown of West Danby, Joan L. (Christopher) O'Day of Canastota, and June L. (Butch) McCracken of Ithaca; one brother, Robert (Sue) Russell of Virginia; four sisters, Shirley Thomas, Ruth Ann Pierce, Betty Lou (Warren) Kinser and Susan Dalton, all of Virginia; one grandson, Leslie "Mac" McCracken of Ithaca; one granddaughter, Laura ("Peaches" to Grandpa) Brown of West Danby; one sister-in-law, Ev (Roy) Hogben of Ithaca; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Russell; and one sister, Helen Spring.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Covert Funeral Home, 7199 S. Main St., Ovid, on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Bruce Scott officiating. Prayers of Committal will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Sheldrake, where a Military Honors Tribute will be performed by members of the Trumansburg American Legion.

Helen Virginia Spring, 73, of Loudoun County, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006. Mrs. Spring was born July 14, 1932, in Leesburg, the daughter of Lester H. and Hilda E. Wilklow Russell. She retired as senior lab assistant at Hazelton Lab, where she had worked for 28 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Joanne Lewis Lee of Leesburg; two brothers, Robert H. Russell of Paeonian Springs and John David Russell of Interlaken, N.Y.; four sisters, Shirley Marie Thomas of Winchester, Ruth Ann Pierce of Purcellville, Betty Lou Kinser of Davidsville, N.C., and Susan Mae Cummings of Suffolk; and two grandchildren.
A brother, James Michael Russell, is deceased.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, Leesburg, with Pastor Robert Glascock officiating. Burial will be in Hillsboro Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
