Suicide of Former Mishawakian
The following item appeared in the associated press dispatches of the Chicago papers Friday, dated Wilmington, N.C., Jan 1: "A well dressed stranger was found dead with his throat cut to-day. A knife covered with blood was lying near him. On his person was a gold watch, $50, and a check-book on the South Bend, Ind., national bank, showing a deposit of $2,300 by F. W. Whitlow. He had a cork leg." Inquiry at the bank this afternoon by a Tribune reporter, revealed the fact that the one, undoubtedly referred to in the dispatch was Lute B. Wilklow, son of the late Frank Wilklow, of Mishawaka, as he was known to be on a journey in the south. He had been engaged for a number of years railroading in different parts of the country, and a year or so ago received injuries in an accident on a Texas railroad that caused him the loss of one of his lower limbs. He sued the railroad company and got damages amounting in the aggregate to $2,300 after paying his attorneys. He came here and deposited the money in the South Bend National bank. On the 9th of December he drew the balance remaining to his credit in the bank, about $400, and started south. He was somewhat given to dissipation which supposed to have led to his tragic death. He was half brother of John Wilklow, the well known liveryman of Mishawaka.
