Last week I scanned the last two volumes that I have of Salem Outlook. That is the weekly newsletter of Salem Evangelical & Reformed Church (now Salem United Church of Christ) in Rochester. Included are:
- Salem Outlook; volume 38 (Sept. 1941 – May 1942).
- Salem Outlook; volume 39 (Sept. 1942 – May 1943).
Besides the baptisms, marriages and funerals there are a lot of mentions of members of the church. Included are notices of new members and special birthdays of some members.
These two volumes are from the first part of World War II. In the May 22, 1942 issue of the newsletter is a list of church members that were in the service of their country. Then in volume 39 they were starting to receive letters from some of the soldiers. They could tell some information about their experiences but had to be careful not to give their exact location if they were overseas.
I scanned 6 volumes of this church newsletter. It comes out to over 800 pages. You can view all of them on the Online Books web page. Also on there is a history of the church as 3 web pages.
The picture of the church altar was in volume 39 but it has been folded down the middle and it is also slightly out of focus. So I won’t post it with the rest of the picture on the GenWeb website. It was taken at Christmas time.
