The Carpenters would have their last #1 song with “Please Mr. Postman” on both the Billboard and Cash Box charts for the week of Jan. 19 – 25, 1975.

The song was the debut song for The  Marvelettes in 1961. Their version got up to the top of the charts. Then The Beatles recorded the song in 1963 but it was not released as a single.

The Carpenters version features Karen on lead vocal with both Richard and Karen doing background vocals. They had been touring for many years but in 1975 they had to cancel shows when Karen first started having problems with anorexia nervosa. Complication from that disorder would cause Karen’s death in 1983.
