B. J. Thomas had his third hit in 1975 with “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.” His earlier hit songs were “Hooked on a Feeling” (1968) and “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” (1970).
The song would be at the top of both the Cash Box and Billboard pop charts for the week of April 20 – 26. It also topped Billboard’s Easy Listening chart. It also peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The song would win the 1976 the Grammy for Best Country Song, awarded to writers Larry Butler and Chips Moman.
The song was known for having a very long title at 10 words. It would remain the longest title until 1981 when a medley by Stars on 45 had the official title of “Medley: Intro ‘Venus’ / Sugar, Sugar / No Reply / I’ll Be Back / Drive My Car / Do You Wanna Know a Secret / We Can Work It Out / I Should Have Known Better / Nowhere Man / You’re Going to Lose That Girl / Stars on 45” (for legal reasons).
B. J. had become dependent on drugs and alcohol. To cure those demons, he became Christian in 1976. From that time on he would mostly record Christian-Contemporary songs.
B. J. died in 2021 from lung cancer at the age of 78.
