Hit Songs of 1976 – #26

This is a “one hit wonder” song. It is “Afternoon Delight ” by Starland Vocal Band. The group consisted of (r to l  in the video) Jon Carroll, Margot Chapman, Taffy (Nivert) Danoff, Bill Danoff. Taffy and Bill were married at that time. Jon and Margot would marry in 1978 and divorce in 1981. Bill and Taffy would divorce in 1982.

Bill wrote the song. He said was inspired by a restaurant menu with some afternoon delights. But he also added some sexual innuendo. Still the song has a chorus of “Skyrockets in Flight” and the song was perfect for the US Bicentennial in 1976.

The song was on the top of the Billboard chart for two weeks (July 5 – 10). It was at #1 on the Cash Box chart for three weeks (June 20 – July 10).

The song was nominated for Grammy awards as “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals” and “Record of the Year.” The song did win a Grammy as “Best Arrangement for Voices (duo, group or chorus).” The group also won a Grammy as “Best New Artist” of the year.

The group was given a summer replacement TV series in 1977 that ran for 6 episodes. All the praise and awards didn’t help as they never had another hit.  They officially broke up in 1981.
