A couple of days ago I went to Steve Morse’s One-Step Website<\/a><\/strong> to search for someone on 1800s passenger records. That search failed but I always look at what else is available on a website. One thing that jumped out to me is that he has Voter records for New York State. These aren’t old records; these are voter records from 2002 to 2022.<\/p>\n

You can search by just a surname and it will give you a list of everyone with that name. One of the rare families that I research in NY State only had 13 people with the surname (see below).<\/p>\n

You can search for a single person. I found out that their are two other Richard Halsey in New York State of voting age. I did a search for John Smith and ended up with a list of over 1100.<\/p>\n

The name list you get has current address, date of birth and current political party. Wait<\/strong>… I just skipped over the very important fact that these records have birth dates for living people. I was able to fill in birth dates for distant relatives when all I had was an approximate date. I was also able to see that people that were once married are now living in two different residences.<\/p>\n

You can also click on the name in the first column and get even more information. In a couple of cases it showed that people had been “purged” and the reason was because of death. Some got purged because they moved out of state. And if it interests you, you can see all the elections a person has voted in.<\/p>\n

Steve also has voter records from 19 other states. Most of those also give full birthdates. Go search and see who you can find.<\/p>\n
