Did you have a CB radio in the 70s? They were very popular at that time especially after the 1973 oil embargo. As a part of the craze was “Convoy” by C. W. McCall. It was a novelty song that used CB slang as part of the narration.
C. W. McCall was a character created by William Fries Jr. for advertisements for a bread maker. The ads were narrated a trucker character named “C. W. McCall.” Then when Fries wrote the song, he used his character name as the narrator to the song.
The song got up to #1 on the Cash Box chert for the week of Jan. 4 – 10. It was on the top spot of the Billboard chart for three weeks (Jan. 11 – 31). It even got up #2 on the UK record chart.
The song inspired the 1978 movie Convoy starring Kris Kristofferson and Ali MacGraw.
The video has C. W. McCall (really Wm. Fries) doing the song on The Mike Douglas Show.
Fries died from complications of cancer on April 1, 2022, at age 93.
