Hit Songs of 1976 – #20

“Silly Love Songs” is credited to Paul and Linda McCartney. Paul said it was written as a rebuttal to music critics (and his former Beatles bandmate, John Lennon) who had criticized him for writing lightweight love songs.

The song was at the top of the Cash Box chart for two weeks (May 23 – June 5). It was at #1 on the Billboard chart for the week of May 16 – 23. Then it was knocked off the top by a Diana Ross song. But it returned to #1 for 5 more weeks (June 5 – July 3). At the end of the year Billboard said it was their pick for song of the year.

The video is the album version of the song which ran 5:54. Most radio stations played an edited version that was only 3 minutes and 28 seconds. The video shows how crazy it is to be on tour.

Paul just finished up a tour a couple of months ago. He was also on Saturday Night Live last night for SNL’s last show of the season.
