Hit Songs of 1973 – #48

Elton John is back with his third hit of 1973. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is another song with lyrics by Bernie Taupin and music by Elton. This song refers to getting back to the farm. Wikipedia says “The song expresses a desire to get back to one’s ‘roots,’ a common theme of Taupin’s early lyrics.”

The song sat at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks (Dec. 2 – 22). It got up to the top of the Cash Box Top 100 chart for the week of Dec. 2 – 8.

Elton is an HIV/AIDS charity fundraiser and has been involved in the fight against AIDS since the late 1980s.He established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992, which has raised over £300 million since its inception, and a year later he began hosting his annual AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Party, which has since become one of the biggest high-profile Oscar parties in the Hollywood film industry.

Elton has retired from touring so if you want to see him perform you will have to watch music videos or a recorded concert.
