Hit Songs of 1974 – #2

The Steve Miller Band had a hit with “The Joker” in early 1974. It was written by Steve but he borrowed lyrics from the old song “Lovey Dovey” so he had to give writing credits to the writes to that song; Eddie Curtis and Ahmet Ertegun.

“The Joker” was on the  was at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week of Jan. 6 – 12. It was on the top of the Cash Box Top 100 chart for the week of Jan 13 – 19.

The Steve Miller Band was formed in 1966 and in 1968 they backed Chuck Berry on a live album. Also in 1968 they released “Living in the U.S.A.” which I played on college radio. Most people in western NY will remember a version of the song released by Wilmer and the Dukes.

Later hits by The Steve Miller Band were “Take The Money and Run,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” and “Abracadabra.”

In 2010–11, Miller was an Artist in Residence at the USC Thornton School of Music, where he taught students in the Popular Music and Music Industry programs. At a guitar auction in 2011, Miller said that he owned 450 guitars. In 2016, Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
