Barbra Streisand had a massive hit in 1974 with “The Way We Were.” The song was from the 1973 movie by the same name that starred Barbra and Robert Redford. That movie grossed $50 million.

The song was written by Alan Bergman & Marilyn Bergman (lyrics), and Marvin Hamlisch (score). The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 46th Academy Awards. It would also win the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1974 and the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1975.

On the Cash Box Top 100 chart the song was at #1 for the week of Feb 3 – 9, 1974. On the Billboard Hot 100 chart it was on top for the week of Jan. 27 – Feb. 2. Then it was back at #1 for another two weeks (Feb. 10 – 23). At the end of 1974 Billboard had the song as the #1 song of the year.
