America had a good string of hits in the 1970s. In 1972 there was “A Horse with No Name” and “Ventura Highway.” In 1974 “Tin Man” climbed the charts. Then in 1975 their big hit was “Sister Golden Hair.” It got up to #2 on the Cash Box Top 100 chart for the week of June 8 – 14. That same week it was on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Record World said the song is “the story of a guy who’s found love at last but doesn’t necessarily want to marry her.”
The group has always been refer to as a trio although there were other group members in the touring band. The original members were Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Gerry Beckley. It was Beckley that wrote “Sister Golden Hair” and he is playing a steel guitar on the song (but not in the video, below). Is he the lead singer in video? Probably, but I’m not sure.
Dan Peek left the group in 1977 and died in 2011. Bunnell and Beckley are still with the group and they will be in Niagara Falls, Canada on Oct. 30 and Syracuse on Nov. 1.
