Hit Songs of 1975 – #25

Neil Sedeka had a hit earlier in 1975 with “Laughter in the Rain” but here is another song that he wrote with his writing partner Howard Greenfield. It is “Love Will Keep Us Together” which Neil recorded in 1973 but wasn’t released as a single. Then in 1975 it became a monster hit for Captain and Tennille. It was their first release.

The song was at the top of the Cash Box chart for two weeks (June 22 – July 4). It was #1 on the Billboard chart for 4 weeks (June 8  – July 12). Both charts voted the song of the year for 1975.

Captain (Daryl Dragon) and Toni Tennille met in 1972. At that time Captain was playing keyboards for the Beach Boys. When the Beach Boys needed an additional keyboard, Captain suggested Tennille. She toured with the Beach Boys for a year.

When “Love Will Keep Us Together” became popular they also recorded a Spanish version, “Por Amor Viviremos” and some radio stations would mix the two together.

In July 1976, they were invited to perform in  the White House in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II and President Gerald Ford. That lead to their TV show (1976 – 77) which only last 20 episodes.

Over the next few years, Captain & Tennille released a string of hit singles including “The Way I Want to Touch You” (#4), “Lonely Night (Angel Face)” (#3), “Shop Around” (#4), “Muskrat Love” (#4), and “Do That to Me One More Time” (#1).

Tennille filed for divorce from the Captain in 2014 but they remained friends. She was at his side when he died of Kidney failure in 2019.
