Old News – Columbia Bank

Columbia Savings Bank was founded in 1884. They would expand very slowly. They ran into financial trouble in 1992 and were put into federal receivership. In 1994 they were acquired by Key Bank.

Their banks were easy to spot along the highway as they had a round building attached to a square lobby. The picture is a “generic” picture and I’m not sure where it was located. The former Columbia Bank that was opening in Brockport in 1971 is still a bank but now operated as a Citizens Bank. One on Ridge Road in Greece is now Sky Nails. If you know of any other of the buildings that still exist, please leave a note in the comments.

Columbia Banking Coming To Brockport

Columbia Banking, Saving & Loan Association and Edwin Duryea of Brockport have entered into a lease agreement as the first step for Columbia Banking to construct a new office at Brockport.

Columbia leased property owned by Duryea at the southwest corner of Lake Road (Route 19) and Route 31, just south of the village of Brockport. The one acre parcel is in the Town of Sweden and is opposite two area shopping centers. The new Duryea Motor Building adjoins the Columbia site.

Following preliminary arrangements Columbia plans to erect its unique “Bank-in-the-Round” structure with its landmark time-temperature clock. Columbia will operate a full savings and mortgage facility at Brockport and will have an auto teller and parking on the site.

Announcing the plans Columbia indicated that expansion by the State University of Brockport, new development by industries in Brockport and the Town of Sweden and the construction of new arterial highways in the area warrants the construction of a state chartered saving and loan association by Columbia Banking. Columbia will make mortgage money available to residents of Brockport and aid in future development. The new office will better serve Columbia customers in the Brockport area.

The new Columbia Banking saving center would be the 11th office in Columbia’s 5 county market area. There are now branches in Brighton, Canandaigua, Geneseo, Greece, Irondequoit, Newark, Penn Yan and Rochester..

Columbia Banking has assets of $264,104,000 and is New York’s largest chartered federally insured savings association.
