I extracted the marriages and death from the Rochester newspapers from the first half of 1839 and put them on this web page. I do my best to make them look like what was in the newspapers, including spelling mistakes.
Besides marriage and death notices there seem to be a lot of people that were missing and there are notices looking for information on their whereabouts.
I also included a notice of a new private school and two notices of circuses that were coming to Rochester 1839.
January and February were a tragic time for the Chapin family. They had 3 children die with a months time. They are listed as the children of Graham H, Chapin but no mention of his wife. Digging on the internet I found that she was Caroline (Holley) Chapin. I also saw out that Graham died in 1843 and is buried with the children in lot 16, Section C, of Mt. Hope Cemetery. None of them have a tombstone. Caroline lived until 1896 and is buried in Massachusetts.
Usually newspapers of that time don’t have deaths of children but there seem to be a lot for these 6 months.
There was a new newspaper in Rochester in 1839; The Daily Sun. It started on April 10th but it looks like the last issue published was Dec. 31, 1839. The Rochester Public Library has scanned their old bound volume beginning June 11 and this is the June 1839 issues. There is only one marriages record from them in June but there are some interesting police and court records. Hopefully your ancestor’s aren’t in those.
Next week will be the records from July – Dec. 1839.
