Hit Songs of 1976 – #5

Don’t let the kids hear this song. There isn’t any dirty words but it is very suggestive. Ir is the first hit by Donna Summer, “Love to Love You Baby.” In 1968 joined she German adaptation of the musical Hair. She learned to speak German while there.

In 1975 she released a short version of “Love to Love You Baby” in the Netherlands. She had given the title to the music producer and she end up with a co-writing credit for the song. The version released in the US was 4 minutes and 57 seconds but I think radio stations played a shorter version. On the album also called “Love to Love You Baby” it was one whole side and was 16 minutes and 49 seconds long.

The song got up to #3 on the Cash Box for two weeks (Feb. 8 – 21). It did slightly better on the Billboard where it was at #2 for Feb. 1 – 14.

Donna would have many more disco hits and would end up being called the “Queen of Disco.” She won the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for “Hot Stuff” (1979) making her the first black artist to win a Grammy in a rock category. Altogether she would win 5 Grammy awards. She was Billboard‘s Top Female Artist and Top Singles Artist of 1979.

Donna Summer would die in 2012 at aged 63 from lung cancer even though she didn’t smoke.
