Hit Songs of 1973 – #8

The Spinners formed in Michigan in 1954. They recorded their first song in 1961 and had modest success for many years. Then in 1972 they released “I’ll Be Around” and it shot up the record charts. Then in 1973 they had a hit with “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love.” It got up to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks (Feb. 25 – March 10. It did better on the Cash Box Top 100 chart where it was at the top of their chart for the week of Feb. 18 – 25. Notice on the video that they are called the Detroit Spinners.” They had to use that name in Britain because there was another group there called “The Spinners.”

In 1974 the group released “Then Came You” that also featured Dionne Warwick. In later years hits were “They Just Can’t Stop It,” “The Rubberband Man,” and “Games People Play.”

The lead singer of “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” was Bobby Smith. He died in 2013. The group that still tours is down to only one original member (Henry Fambrough – baritone).
