Helen Reddy’s biggest hit had come in 1972 with “I Am Woman” which she co-wrote. In 1973 she also had a hot with “Delta Dawn.” In 1972 the song was recorded by Tanya Tucker and it got up to #6 on the country music chart. Helen recording hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week of Sept. 9 – 15, 1973. On the Cash Box Top 100 chart it was on the top for 2 weeks (Sept. 2 – 15).
Helen had a few more hit songs including “Candle on the Water” from the 1975 film Pete’s Dragon in which she also starred. Then in the 1980s she moved over to starring in plays. That continued into the 90s. Then in 2002 she announced her retirement.
She came out of retirement in 2011 and had some minor success. A few years later she was diagnosed with dementia and moved into the Motion Picture & Television Country House. That is where she died in 2020.
She was an enthusiastic genealogist and researched her family’s history extensively and founded the Tasmanian Genealogical Society.
