“Jackie Blue” was the only #1 song by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. When they were picking a name for the group they first wanted to be called “Family Tree” but that group name was already in use. Then they thought about the name “Buffalo Chips” but decided against it. So they finally started calling themself “Cosmic Corn Cob & His Amazing Ozark Mountain Daredevils.” That only last a short time until it was shortened.
The melody for “Jackie Blue” was written by Larry Lee, the drummer of the group. He called upon their record producer for lyrics. His lyrics were about a drugged-out guy. Those lyrics were rejected. Instead another member of the group, Steve Cash, wrote lyrics about a reclusive girl. That is Larry Lee singing on the video.
The song got up to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks (May 11 – 24). It did better by hitting #1 on the Cash Box Top 100 chart for two weeks (May 4 – 17).
The group never had another hit song but somehow managed to keep touring until last year. Of coarse over the years some members drifted away and came back. Other members were replaced over all those years.
