I have had Veteran Deaths (Surnames E & F) for about 20 years. Back then I got about 15 boxes of Veteran Grave Books in Monroe County from Mary Smith. She was the Hamlin Town Historian and she rescued the grave books from being destroyed. I extracted all the veteran graves from all the suburb towns I got and those can be found on the Cemetery Page on the GenWeb site.
I had lots of books of veteran graves for Rochester but I never got to those. But then I found out that Mary had given the books I had extracted to the Ogden Farmers’ Library. I donated the Rochester books to them also. They have all those books out on open shelves.
I still had this one book sitting in a corner after all these years. Early this year I tried extracting the data on the slips in the book. I gave up after just a few slips as there is a lots of information on each one. So last week I scanned each of the slips. For most of the veterans there are two pages but one veteran has 4 pages.
I thought these were all veteran deaths during World War II. One is for a veteran that was in WWI, WWII and Korea.
I thought these were all veterans killed in action. No, there are some that are labeled as “Died Non Battle” (abbreviated DNB).
I thought these would be all Monroe County Veterans but a few are labeled as “Out of County.” Some of those have parents or other relatives that lived in Monroe County.
There is a lot of data handwritten that the OCR couldn’t figure out. The handwriting is also very small but you can zoom in on the PDF file. There are abbreviations that I have no idea what they mean. I noticed a few deaths during WWII were buried here in Monroe County a few years after the war.
For surnames beginning with E and F there are about 90 veteran death records. Where are the rest of the books like these? I have no idea. Whoever has them is missing this book. I sure would like to scan the rest of this series
I will be donating this book to the Ogden Farmers’ Library to be with all the Veteran Grave books.
