Hit Songs of 1971 – #6

The Osmonds have been in the music scene for many years. Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay were singing as a barbershop quartet at Disneyland when Andy Williams’ father saw them. He told Andy that they should be on his show. That was 1962 and they soon became regulars on the TV show. Over the years they introduced Donny, Marie and Jimmy as part of the family of singers.

The Osmonds released singles in the 1960s but it wasn’t until 1971 when they had their first song to make the pop charts. It was “One Bad Apple” that ended up climbing to #1. Billboard had the song at the top of their Hot 100 for 6 weeks (Feb 6 –  March 13). On the Cash Box Top 100  chart it was at the top for 3 weeks (Feb. 7 – 27) then it would come back to the top again for the week of March 7 – 13th. This would be the only #1 for the group. Donny would start a solo career later in 1971. The four original members tried to get away from their bubblegum image and record some more rock songs. They later tried to break into Country music but with limited success.

On the back of the single of “One Bad Apple” was “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” that had been a hit for The  Hollies.
