I spent most of last week scanning a children’s book; Nixie Bunny in Faraway-Lands. Seeing as it isn’t local history it is over on Archive.org. This is a story about Grandpa (Nixie) and Grandma traveling around the world with their two grandchildren; Molly and Browny. The book describes the places that they visit as “strange lands.” They visit some Native Americans, Eskimoes, people in Holland, two different places in Africa, China and finally Japan. There are some nice illustrations by Helen Geraldine Hodge.
This book was published in 1917 and most of the people that the bunnies meet are really outdated stereotypes. So it might not be that good for children of today. It still needed to be scanned as a historical children’s book.
This is one of four Nixie Bunny books by Joseph C. Sindelar. He wrote other books for children and also wrote some books for teachers so he was probably an educator. I can’t find any biography of him online.
According to Archive.org this book is only in 8 libraries in the US. I don’t think that a lot of libraries have kept old children’s books.
I also scanned the 4 pages program for Veteran’s Memorial Sunday Service from May 25, 1952. Every year they have a memorial service for the veteran’s that died in the previous year. The last page has the names of the deceased veterans. Note that 23 veterans of the Spanish-American War since May 1951.
I have previously scanned the veteran’s programs for 1964 and 1979.
