The Edgar Winter Group had a hit with their song “Frankenstein” in 1973. The instrumental song includes solos by each member of the group. Edgar plays keyboards, sax and does a dueling drum solo with Chuck Ruff. It was recorded in many longer takes and then edited down into the finished version.
The group would have another hit with “Free Ride” and then break up. Seeing as Edgar could play so many instruments (he also plays guitar), he ended up being a very busy session musician. Last year he toured with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band and got to play a couple of his songs including “Frankenstein.”
The song would be number one on both the Billboard Top 100 and Cash Box Top 100 for the week of May 20 – 26, 1973.
I have included two videos. The first one is the version you would have heard on the radio in 1973. It is 4 minutes and 45 seconds. The second video is a live version from 1973 that runs 9 minutes and 15 seconds.
