The Spinners were back with another hit with “They Just Can’t Stop It (The Games People Play).” They were formed in 1954 but didn’t have their first song released until 1961. At that time they were recording for Motown but they didn’t really have much success. Then in 1972 they moved over to Atlantic records and started having a lot more success with songs like “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love ” and “Then Came You” with Dionne Warwick. The Spinners still tour but none of the original members are in the current group. The last original member, Henry Fambrough, left the group in 2023 and died last year.
The song got up to #5 on the Billboard chart for two weeks (Oct. 19 – Nov. 1). It did better on the Cash Box chart where it got up to #2 for the week of Oct. 19 – 25. The female singer on this song is Evette Benton.
Note on the “video” it says that the group is “Detroit Spinners.” There was another group in Britain called The Spinners so in Europe our American Spinners had to have their songs released as the Detroit Spinners.
