Hit Songs of 1974 – #24

The week of June 23- 29, 1974 saw Gordon Lightfoot at the top of both of the US record charts. His song “Sundown” was about his girlfriend that he thought was running around behind his back.

Gordon’s style was very like the folk musicians that he grew up listening to. I think his best selling single was 1976’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

Gordon was born in Ontario, Canada and, although he did live for some time in Los Angeles, lived most of his life in and around Toronto. Setlist.fm (website) says that he played the historic Massey Hall in Toronto 88 times through his career. He played at the Kodak Center in April 2022, just 13 months before he died in Toronto in May 2023
