Hit Songs of 1975 – #20

Earth, Wind and Fire had a really big hit with “Shining Star” in 1975. It was written by three members of the group; Maurice White (lead vocal), Larry Dunn (clavinet), and Philip Bailey (vocals & congas). The song was at the top of both the Billboard and Cash Box charts for the week of May 18 – 25, 1975. It also won a Grammy award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. In 2008, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The group was formed in 1970 by Maurice White. It has always been a large band with anywhere between 10 to 15 members. Over the years many members left and were replaced so that there are only 3 original members. The horn section of the group has played with many other artists over the years. Although the group had more hits, “Shining Star” was their only #1.
