ZZ Top formed in 1969 with vocalist-guitarist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard, and bassist-vocalist Dusty Hill (until his death in 2021). They released their first album in 1969 but it was 1975 when “Tush” got their first respectable airplay. It was played heavily here in Rochester on WCMF. Heck; CMF is probably still playing this song as it fits well into their Classic Rock format.
Dusty Hill said that “Tush” song was written at a sound check in about ten minutes. It only got up to #20 on the Billboard chart for the week of Aug. 31 – Sept. 6. That same week it was at #12 on the Cash Box chart.
ZZ Top would have a lot more hits in the early 1980s. Elwood Francis took over on bass in 2021.
The group tours a lot but they a doing a residency at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas from Dec. 3 – 10.
