Glen Campbell had a cross-over hit in 1975 with “Rhinestone Cowboy,” that is, that it was a hit on both the pop and country charts. On the Cash Box chart it was at #1 for the week of Sept. 7 – 13. On the Billboard Hot 100 (Pop) chart it was at the top for 2 weeks, Aug. 31 – Sept. 13.
Early in the 1960s Glen ended up in Los Angeles as a session guitarist, hardly ever credited. He spent over a year filling in for Brian Wilson on a Beach Boys tour. In 1967’s “Gentle on My Mind,” was his first success. That song was followed by the bigger hit “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” later in 1967, and “Wichita Lineman” in 1968. He hosted a 1968 summer replacement for television’s The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. That led to his own weekly variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, which ran from January 1969 through June 1972.
Glen won Grammy Awards for Gentle on My Mind,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” and “Wichita Lineman.” “Rhinestone Cowboy” was nominated for a Grammy but didn’t win.
In 2010 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He then went on a final “Goodbye Tour,” with three of his children joining him in his backup band. By 2012 he was having trouble remembering lyrics. He died in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 8, 2017, at the age of 81.
