The Toys

The next song on the top of the record charts in 1965 was “A Lover’s Concerto” by The Toys. The song was written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell. The melody was from “Minuet in G major” that was attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach. The song is now believed to have been written by Christian Petzold and Bach only transcribed it. There is a difference in that “Minuet in G major” is written in 3/4 time, whereas “A Lover’s Concerto” is arranged in 4/4 time.

The Toys were a trio from Jamaica, NY that consisted of Barbara Harris, Barbara Parritt and June Montiero. They formed in 1961 and disbanded in 1968 with “A Lover’s Concerto” being their highest charting song.

“A Lover’s Concerto” was the top song on the Cash Box record chart for the week of Oct. 17 – 23. It never was able to get to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart but maintained the #2 spot for 3 weeks (Oct. 25 – Nov. 13).
