1836 Newspaper Vitals

I uploaded web pages that have the marriages and death that were published in the Rochester newspapers in 1836:

There were two daily newspaper, three weekly newspapers and a semi-weekly newspaper in Rochester but there are a lot of issues that disappeared over time.

All the Rochester newspapers marriages and deaths from 1818 – 1836 on the Vital Records page.

There are some records that appear in 3 newspapers while others are in just one. Some people’s names are spelled different from one newspaper to another. One thing I can’t figure out is how someone from Rochester could end up marrying another from one of the New England states.

Mount Hope Cemetery wouldn’t open for another year. So  pepole that died in Rochester were most likely buried in Western Cemetery that was located on W. Main Street. Those burial were moved at a later date and some of those people that died in 1836 have tombstones in Mt. Hope.

There are some strange abbreviations used in the newspapers of that era. Here are some to help make sense of the records:

  • inst. = instant, an old word meaning this month.
  • ult. = ultimo, an old word meaning last month.
  • U. C. = Upper Canada, old name for the current Provence of Ontario.
  • M. T. – Michigan Territory (it became a state in 1837).

  1. Thank you, Dick, for uploading this page, and all the other Rochester Marriage and Deaths pages on the Vital Records Page. They are a valuable resource, and they are also interesting and fun to read. I have found several genealogy clues, and also interesting information about the history of Rochester.
