Hit Songs of 1970 – #36

The group Sugarloaf had a hit in 1970 with “Green-Eyed Lady.” The group was originally known as Chocolate Hair but the recording company suggested that they find a new name. The name Sugarloaf came from the name of the famous mountain outside of Boulder, Colorado.

The song got up to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of Oct. 18 – 24. On the Cash Box Top 100 it only got up to #5 for the week of Oct. 25 – 31.

The video, below, is the album version of the song. The single version that only ran 3:33. There was also a radio-edit version that ran only 2:58. I was playing the album version in 1970 at our college radio station, WNTC, because I could. We already were playing “album cuts” that would become standard on some FM stations later in the 1970s.
