I scanned “Upstate Echoes” the ninth book by Arch Merrill dated 1950. Most of these stories, like his other books, were columns published previously in his column in the Democrat & Chronicle newspaper. Usually his stories were about people and places of western New York. In this book he includes chapters about the North Country, Niagara Falls and the Southern Tier.
He writes about a lady of the North Country who was won by the toss of a coin and the one time King of Spain who held court in the backwoods. He also tells about fabulous Elbert Hubbard, and a silver-tongued infidel.
Did you know that silent films were made in Ithaca, NY? It didn’t last very long before movie making moved to Hollywood. Mr. Merrill even tells about daredevils in barrels and boats that went over Niagara Falls.
I also uploaded an 8-page booklet about the building at 40 Franklin Street. At one time that was the main office of Rochester Savings Bank. It is great architecture and has a fantastic interior design.
